Artist statement
The same thing, seen in different light or from a different distance, is not quite the same thing. Once memory is involved, what stood in front of us and what we later say we saw drift further apart still.
That interval is Malafeeva's subject. A photograph records reality without being it; she takes this as a starting point rather than a flaw to correct.
The distance shows most clearly in ordinary things, because those are the ones we are sure we already know.
作品解説
同じものでも、光と距離が変われば、別のものに見えてきます。そこに記憶が重なると、目の前にあったものと、あとで「見た」と思い出すものは、少しずつ離れていきます。
マラフェエワが撮っているのは、その「あいだ」です。写真は現実を写しますが、現実そのものではありません。彼女はそれを欠点ではなく、出発点にしています。
ありふれたものほど、この距離はよく見えます。誰もが、すでに知っていると思っているからです。
Biography
Ksenia Malafeeva (b. 1981) is a contemporary artist working primarily with photography. Based between Dubai and Moscow, she holds a degree in Art History. Her practice explores perception, memory and the instability of the everyday, treating the photograph not as a fixed record but as a space in which reality and recollection continually shift.

クセニア・マラフェエワ（1981年生）は、写真を主な媒体とする現代美術家。ドバイとモスクワを拠点に活動し、美術史の学位を取得している。知覚、記憶、そして日常の不確かさを主題とし、写真を固定された記録ではなく、現実と記憶が絶えず揺れ動く場として捉えている。
